Is there a Drama group in Oranmore?

Lead by a committee of voluntary members from the community; bualadh bos (Gaelic for applause/ clap hands) is the name of Oranmore’s amateur music & drama group.

                  What does Bualadh Bos do?

With a membership of 65 (and growing weekly) who meet from September to May each year, to produce plays and musicals, ranging from comedy, serious drama, political satire through music, supper theatre, pub play-readings etc.

                  When do you meet?

Rehearsals are usually on Monday evening for the Music side and Tuesday evening for the Drama side of Bualadh Bos. In Keanes bar, ask the barman or in the restaurant they’ll show you where to go.

Do I need experience in music or Drama?

Experience is welcome but not at all necessary.

When are the auditions for musical/dramatic roles?

All members come to the Audition Night. Auditions are held in September each year, and are advertised locally. Keep an eye on this site for details or check out ‘More News'.

What kind of thing might I be doing as a member?

Apart from having FUN! - Always welcoming new talent, in all areas whether your interest is singing, dancing, musician, acting, back stage, production, front of house or joining the committee. There’s loads of stuff for doing. You can get as involved as you’d like, long-term or short-term.

Why do people join the group?

Apart from the community involvement, camaraderie and friendships that are formed during the year, many join to aid self-confidence and personal development, meet people from the area and have a bit of craic over the winter months.

                  Is there a membership fee?

There is a nominal membership fee, payable annually.

Can I get involved, but only for the time of the performances?

While the majority of members meet weekly/monthly during the season, there are those who wish only to get involved on the nights of the performances, or in the few weeks leading up to the performance.

What kind of, non-performance, voluntary work would I do for a production?

Sound and light technicians, sound effects, set design, set creation, carpentry, wardrobe, makeup, distribution, graphic design of printed material, raffle ticket sellers, ushers, and many more positions that are too numerous to mention. Again, experience is great but not needed.

Is there a social element to the group?

The group often meets socially to go to local and national events that are usually (but not always!) music or drama related, also enjoying a day at the races, the greyhounds, oyster festival, traditional music nights, and a wide variety of fundraising events; such as the table quiz, raffles, etc arranged by the social members of the committee.

                  Where are the productions held?

Traditionally, bualadh bos productions are performed in Keane’s Night Club “Kudos”, when the auditorium is transformed into a theatre. With a seating capacity of up to 250 - the productions are intimate, and held mid week from Tuesday to Thursday. It’s important to Bualadh Bos that entry to the productions is affordable, and accessible to the community at large.

                  Is there any training?

Keen to assist the membership’s requests; the calendar of events usually includes several drama-related workshops, e.g. acting, directing, relaxation for actors, theatrical makeup, lighting, sound and anything else the membership feel appropriate or want to organize during the season. There is a nominal charge to cover costs.

                  How and when to join?

Membership is open throughout the year. Download the application form and leave it into the Development Office in Oranmore Village (beside the Library). Or fill it in and e-mail it back to us. Or go the contact us window of this site.

If I have a question, that’s not covered here?

Go to the Contact Us page, send us an e-mail and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can (it might be a few days or more).
